In 1968, at age 18, Jim Aubuchon wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, so he joined the Navy after graduating from high school at Earl Rooster High in Reno, Nevada. His father was a flight mechanic, so when Aubuchon turned 18 in May, he enlisted the following July. He was stationed along the coast of Vietnam, where their ship, the Destroyer, patrolled the coast.
