Farmers should monitor soil temperature when planning fall nitrogen application

With above-average and recordbreaking fall temperatures and dry soil conditions, harvest has progressed rapidly across the state of North Dakota. As harvest begins to conclude for several major crops, attention is being turned to postharvest field management and fertilizer applications.

For the week ending October 20, 2024, there were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 19% very short, 37% short, 42% adequate, and 2% surplus.
