Grand Forks Chorales Celebrates Women Composers

The Grand Forks Chorales launches its 2019-2020 Season with a celebration of women composers, past and present.

The 200th Anniversary of Clara Schumann is 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 1st, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th Street, Grand Forks.

Clara Schumann is one of the most distinguished composers and pianists of the Romantic era with a career spanning more than 60 years. Her works are featured alongside English composer, Dame Ethel Smyth who composed works for piano, chamber music, orchestra, opera, as well as choral works. Smyth was a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union and her composition “March of the Women” became the anthem for women’s suffrage movement.

Amy Beach composed the first symphony by an American woman and is one of the first to succeed without the benefit of European training, and her “Gaelic” Symphony was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896.

Local harpist, composer, and music teacher, Callie Stadem, is also featured in the evening’s program.

Advance tickets can be purchased online at gfchorales.org/tickets or in person at Popplers Music, 1726 S. Washington Street, Grand Forks.
